Council Member Details

Janice Johnstone

Competition Secretary

Janice lives on a working farm in Ayrshire with her husband, Jimmie. They have two grown up sons who come back occasionally to raid the fridge, borrow a car, and keep their parents up-to-date with their busy lives.

She works part-time for her local council, spending the rest of her time sorting out paperwork for the farm and her husband’s haulage business.

She has been a member of Ayr Writers’ Club since the 1990s, attending her first SAW conference in Blairgowrie in 1998. Much to her amazement, she was awarded first prize in the Under 7s with a story inspired by trying to get her younger son up in time for school. Since then, she has been placed in a number of SAW competitions. Her family has proved very useful in triggering ideas for children’s stories, lighter looks at life and short stories over the years.

She has been published in a number of women’s magazines here and abroad, written scripts for children’s radio programmes for the BBC, had articles published, was commissioned to research and write sections for an information pack on The River Ayr Way and was even short listed for the Herald’s McCash poetry competition – her poem appearing in an anthology in 2013.

More recently, she has collaborated with friends under the banner LiterEight to produce books of short stories, poems and children’s stories.

She is looking forward to becoming more involved with the Scottish Association of Writers.
