Marc has just returned from a holiday in Germany, visiting his sister Ruth and through her, meeting her friends, Thomas and Cora in the former East German area of Thoringen. Whilst, visiting they went to the World Heritage site of Wartburg a castle high on a mountainous hill. The same castle where the persecuted Martin Luther took refuge under the protection of Frederick the Wise.
Marc said of this visit "It's quite a feast for the eyes, being built on 11th Century foundations, but having successive additions through the centuries and being given a substantial refit in the 'Arts & Crafts' style of the late 19th and early 20th century. We were waiting for the English speaking guide to arrive, when a woman some distance away asked in English, if we knew where the group should wait. I called out that she had found the correct group and afterwards we got talking. I'd never met her before, but in conversation she told me she was a Scottish writer, from around Kelso, researching a historical novel, and I replied that I was a writer too and gave her my SAW card."
She reacted immediately. "You're Marc Sherland, I don’t believe it, we're due to meet up when I return to Scotland.
It turned out to be Margaret Skea, Chair of Borders Writers' Forum, who the SAW Outreach Team met formally on 20th April. Her shock, Marc's surprise at such a coincidence! It's a small but interconnected world, and the SAW makes the writers' network so much more effective.

News just in.....following a fantastic Outreach visit the BWF intend to affiliate.

Make sure you book up for Write up North in Elgin on Saturday June 17th and also take part in the Solstice Competitions - submissions due 24th June.
